Welcome

Please make yourself at home.

For 265 years this property has been a private estate. Now, for the first time, we’ve opened it as the Feather Leaf Inn.

The Feather Leaf Inn has three guest buildings: the Main House, the Dragonfly House and the Ocean House:

History

When this property was built by enslaved people from Africa in 1760 this was a sugar cane plantation under Danish rule. The two-foot thick walls are made out of stone, Danish bricks, cut coral and held together with a lime mortar made from conch shells burned in a kiln near the shoreline. The story of slavery and emancipation on St Croix are foundational to it's culture. We encourage you to learn more about the history of the island and to call and schedule a walking tour of Frederiksted with C.H.A.N.T. (Crucian Heritage Art & Tourism) 340-277-4834, a local community organization.

Our check-out time is 10am. If you have a later flight let us know and you can leave bags with us and you are welcome to spend time on the property as long as you like.

Room cleaning & linens

Text or call 340-474-1358

Drinking water

We provide drinking water in each building in 5 gallon jugs. The Main House has a chilled water dispenser on the back porch. We also have reusable water bottles for purchase in our little gift shop in case you did not bring one.

Trash

If you need a larger trash can, there is one located in the parking lot of Ocean House and the north side of the Main House parking lot. You can also recycle aluminum cans.

Cell phones

If you haven’t already, enable WiFi Calling on your phone in the settings menu. Most carriers require that you call them when you are back in service range. Your phone should work normally once WiFi calling is enabled. Or use internet-based apps (Skype, WhatsApp, ect.).

Rain & windows

Keep the beautiful breezes flowing through your room. In the the Main House, please close the windows before you go to sleep or leave your room. If water accumulates on window sills we're happy to clean it up or provide extra towels, just let us know.

Animals

You may see deer, iguanas, hermit crabs, land crabs, geckos, anoles, hummingbirds, hawks and more!

Shared kitchen

The guest kitchen is in the Dragonfly House and the door labeled with a “K”. The door code is 1760 ‘check’. Please adhere to kitchen guidelines and clean up when you leave.

Water conservation

Water is a limited resource on islands. Like most islanders, we collect rainwater via the roof and store it in cisterns. If the cisterns run low we have water trucked into the property.

Please conserve water when you can.

Bicycles

If you’d like to borrow bicycles, just let us know. Bicycling along the coast road is a good way to get to the pier in Frederiksted, Sandy Point, Rainbow Beach and the lighthouse hike. Always take a lock and lock up the bikes and keep your eye on the potholes! We will set you up with a helmet, lock combination and bicycles.

Beaches & Swimming

Butler Bay is the beach to the north of the property (to your right if you are looking at the sea).  It is a great place to snorkel, swim, and scuba dive. Please check conditions and get in only if conditions are safe. There are no lifeguards.

A few swimming and snorkeling tips for Butler Bay:

- We usually enter the water to the right of the rocks mid-beach. To the left of the rocks that stick out there is coral and it is quite shallow for a long time.

- Wear water shoes or booties for swimming and snorkeling. The sand on the beach was removed by hurricanes and the shallows are rocky.

- Be aware that we have scorpion fish in the bay. Scorpion fish are not aggressive but, just like a stingray, if you step on one you will get spiked by a venomous stinger.

- Do no harm, leave only smiles. Do not stand or touch coral. They are fragile & easily destroyed. Feel free to pick up any liter you see on the beach but leave the shells and coral on the island.

- If you are snorkeling we really like going north(right)  towards the blowhole and staying close to shore. On calm days it is easiest to see colorful fish in the shallow water.

- If you want to know about the five shipwrecks here at Butler Bay, just ask.

- Things to see: turtles, rays, parrotfish, octopus, reef squid, lobster and large schools of small fish.

Other swimming destinations:

Rainbow Beach

One of the most popular beaches on the island and home to Rhythms beach bar and restaurant. It is 1.5 miles towards Frederiksted from Feather Leaf Inn. You can rent paddleboards, kayaks, as well as beach chairs and umbrellas.

Restaurant closes at Sunset.

Frederiksted Pier

Lots of sea life on and around the Pier. The columns are full of purple, red, & yellow sponges. You'll more than likely swim with sea turtles. We recommend a Discover scuba dive with one of the dive shops in Frederiksted.
