✨ Thriving Islands: 2025 Year in Review ✨

2025 was busy, busy, busy—in the very best way.

🪸 Coral restoration in Butler Bay ramped up, with newly added corals now in the “grow-zone layer.” Be sure to check them out on your next dive or snorkel!

🤿 Our Youth Ocean Explorer interns spent a full week snorkeling and diving to create a Reef Guide for Butler Bay, photographing and documenting 115+ marine species (check it out at www.thrivingislands.com). Talk about getting fully immersed in marine biology.

🌱 The first cohort of mangroves was successfully grown in recycled glass! Next up: outplanting them around St. Croix to help build stronger, more resilient coastlines.

🌊 We joined forces with knowledgeable and experienced partners to create a watershed management plan for the Butler Bay/ Creque Dam watershed—a critical first step toward reducing runoff, protecting water quality, and supporting healthy reefs and communities.

🧠 Together with TNC and their coral innovation hub, we helped create hundreds of thousands of new brain corals, offering real hope for reef recovery.

👩‍🏫 Throughout it all, we continued hosting local youth interns, focused on empowerment through education and fostering lifelong stewardship of our coastal ecosystems.

Our Food Forest is growing strong!

Eight years ago, we planted over 100 fruit and nut trees and we continue to grow more.

There are lots of tropical fruits that grow in St Croix that you can’t get in stores but you can find them at the local farmers markets and roadside stands. We encourage everyone to take the time to meet the farmers and prioritize visiting local markets.

Coral fertilization success!

May is spawning season for the grooved brain corals (Diploria Labrynthiformis) here and last week our Thriving Islands dive team collected gametes from nine coral colonies in Butler Bay, St. Croix. As part of our NOAA-funded “Roots for Reefs” project, a collaboration with @ceibastrategies, we’re capturing spawn from these corals to assist them in sexual reproduction, which now rarely occurs naturally due to the large distances between surviving colonies in the wild.

We’ve teamed up with the The Nature Conservancy’s Coral Innovation Hub to combine gametes from parent corals in different parts of the island to create new genetic crosses in hopes they will survive the increased stressors on our reefs. The Nature Conservancy will rear them in tanks on land in a controlled environment to give them a big head start in life, as they will be safe from predators, encrusting algae, and too-hot ocean temperatures — at least until they are big enough to outplant.

Introducing Nooch! 🐶

Three weeks ago, we found Nooch sleeping under our Saman tree. We reached out to the neighborhood to check if she belonged to anyone, but no one came forward.

She is sweetest pup and quickly made her way into our hearts. After careful consideration, we made the decision to adopt Nooch and welcome her to the Feather Leaf family! Since then, she’s been to the vet, she’s made new friends and has settled into her new home.

Her favorite things are cuddles, naps and bathing in the sun! We can’t wait for you to meet her.

Andreya is a yoga teacher at Feather Leaf Inn. She’s also Corina’s mom. ❤️

🧘 Andreya was first introduced to yoga on a beach in Spain in 1965. Fascinated by a man practicing yoga on the each morning, she fell headfirst into her own practice. She went to India where she learned the beginning of her yoga practice.

🧘 Here at the Feather Leaf Inn, you may find Andreya teaching a yoga class, connecting with guests and volunteers, tending the gardens, and hanging laundry to dry in the sun.
